First Weekend of Jazz Fest Ends with Tough Choices

Anderson .Paak

Anderson .Paak, Heart, Juvenile and Mannie Fresh, and Patrice Rushen are four very legit ways to close out the first Sunday.

The first weekend of Jazz Fest ends with the toughest choices in the headliner slot: the retro funk of Anderson .Paak, the classic rock of Heart, or the classic hip-hop of Juvenile with Mannie Fresh. I don’t think you go wrong with any of those choices.

Bonsoir, Catin’s Kristy Guillory is one of the artists featured in Roots on Fire, the Cajun music documentary that we spotlighted yesterday. Bonsoir, Catin will be in the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage at noon for an interview with Barry Ancelet, and they’ll play the Sheraton New Orleans Fais Do-Do Stage at 2:55 p.m.

In our wrap-up of Colombian bands, we highlighted Gaita Loop (Expedia Cultural Exchange Pavilion, 12:40 p.m.; Rhythmpourium Stage, 3:35 p.m.) and the rap act Kombilesa Mi (Congo Square Stage, 2:50 p.m.; Expedia Cultural Exchange Pavilion, 5 p.m.).

Today we posted a very entertaining Milky Way from rock band Silver Synthetic, and I think you’ll agree that they’re worth your time at 2:50 p.m. in the Lagniappe Stage after reading it.

Trumpet Mafia (WWOZ Jazz Tent, 2:50 p.m.) - This show frequently feels like the last day of trumpet summer camp, with the creative deployment of the horn being almost as much fun and compelling as the vibe between the musicians, who clearly feel their camaraderie onstage.

Patrice Rushen interview (Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage, 3 p.m.) - The pianist and vocalist will close the WWOZ Jazz Tent at 5:45 p.m., but this conversation with Melissa Weber should cover a lot of ground, from her 1974 debut album, Prelusion, to the jazz/funk fusion efforts that followed, to her 1980 hit “Forget-Me-Nots,” and her more recent re-embrace of jazz including collaborations of the soundtrack for American Fiction.

ÌFÉ with GOYO of Colombia (Jazz & Heritage Stage, 3:05 p.m.) - Last year, I profiled Otura Mun’s journey from a marching band drumlins to Yorubas-inspired, spiritual electronic dance music. For this set, he’ll be joined by the Colombian female rapper GOYO.
