The New Orleans rock band will receive My Spilt Milk's first Carton of Honor at the New Orleans Music Awards April 7.

This year, everything is the first time for My Spilt Milk’s New Orleans Music Awards including our Carton of Honor—a My Spilt Milk-style recognition of the work that an artist or band has done for an extended period of time. For our maiden voyage, we’re pleased to honor rock band Rotary Downs. The band released its debut EP in 2002 and has released five albums since including 2014’s Traces, a powerful album that shows the band not only at the top of its game but making music that is on trend with independent rock music nationally. When we reviewed the album, Alex Rawls wrote:

Rotary Downs has integrated much of the faux-futurism of [the ‘80s] into its sonic palate to give the songs have a hyperreal, forward-looking quality. Many instruments sound like the most evolved versions of themselves, so the quivering electronic strings scream "romance" on "The Sandwich Islands," even when James Marler sings, "Darling, we're falling to pieces."

In addition, members of the band have been solid citizens of the music community, supportive of the scene and other musicians.

Rotary Downs will join The Soul Rebels, Tank and the Bangas, The Breton Sound, and AF the Naysayer and perform at the New Orleans Music Awards, which will take place Thursday, April 7 at The Howlin’ Wolf. (Tickets are on sale now).

In other Music Awards news, My Spilt Milk is proud welcome new partners to the event. In addition to Fest Cola, we’re pleased to be working with the Gulf Restoration Network, social media consultants Conversations, music technology firm the VL Group, and immigration law firm Gasparian Immigration. They do good work and support New Orleans music and culture.

Finally, voting is still underway for the awards. Say your piece here. Who do you think had the best 2015? Who do you love? If you think it was someone other than our nominees, write in your winner.
