Galactic is "Right On"

The first track from Galactic's upcoming "Into the Deep" presents them as a killer R&B band fronted by The Honorable South's Ms. Charm Taylor.

Galactic's last two studio albums--2010's Ya-Ka-May and 2012's Carnivale Electricos--presented the New Orleans groove machine dipping its foot ass-deep in programmed, looped and sampled beats to bring bounce and other street sounds into their funk and Carnival music.

If the new "Right On" tells us anything reliable, it's that the band's upcoming Into the Deep is going to have more of an R&B vibe. Ms. Charm Taylor of The Honorable South does the frontwoman honors on a classic R&B track pushed by Ben Ellman's baritone sax and Robert Mercurio's bass. The song's not a throwback though, and the handclaps, the horn section, and Taylor's high energy vocal locate "Right On" in the heart of any busy downtown in America, not only New Orleans.

Obviously, one song isn't a safe predictor, but other guest vocalists on the album include Macy Gray, Mavis Staples, JJ Grey, Ryan Montbleau, David Shaw of The Revivalists, Maggie Koerner, and Brushy One String, and there's a lot of soul power in that list.

The album is due out July 17, and Galactic has started a Pledge Music campaign for Into the Deep. Those who preorder the album there can also get such premiums as an autographed turntable and a copy of the album on vinyl, a side stage viewpoint for a show, a USB drive with the WAV high resolution master tracks, and Skype music lessons with members of the band to name a few. The campaign ends when the album is released.
