Kermit Likely to Reopen Mother-in-Law with Live Music

The City Planning Commission has approved the plan; City Council's expected to do the same.

Update: When Kermit Ruffins took over the lease on the Mother-in-Law Lounge in January 2011, he planned to re-open the Treme club as a live music venue. When he wasn' able to get it open by June of that year, its conditional use permit lapsed. The Mother-in-Law Lounge isn't zoned for live music, but it could host it as a nonconforming use under a conditional use permit. If a business stops operation for six months, those permits lapse. Because Ruffins was unable to get the Mother-in-Law back in business with live music within six months of its closure in December 2010, he had to reapply. 

According to a story at Nola.com, yesterday the City Planning Council approved Ruffins' request, though live music will have to end by midnight from Monday to Thursday and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Now the matter goes before City Council, which is expected to approve it as well. Originally, he planned to reopen the Mother-in-Law by Mardi Gras 2011; this time, he's not announcing a timetable.
